Baby’s Development Month By Month

* The First Month:
o Can lift head momentarily
o Turns head from side to side when lying on back
o Hands stay clenched
o Strong grasp reflex present
o Looks and follows object moving in front of them in range of 45 degrees
o Sees black and white patterns
o Quiets when a voice is heard
o Cries to express displeasure
o Makes throaty sounds
o Looks intently at parents when they talk to him/her
* The Second Month:
o Lifts head almost 45 degrees when lying on stomach
o Head bobs forward when held in sitting position
o Grasp reflex decreases
o Follows dangling objects with eyes
o Visually searches for sounds
o Makes noises other than crying
o Cries become distinctive (wet, hungry, etc.)
o Vocalizes to familiar voices
o Social smile demonstrated in response to various stimuli
* The Third Month:
o Begins to bear partial weight on both legs when held in a standing position
o Able to hold head up when sitting but still bobs forward
o When lying on stomach can raise head and shoulders between 45 and 90 degrees
o Bears weight on forearms
o Grasp reflex absent
o Holds objects but does not reach for them
o Clutches own hands and pulls at blankets and clothes
o Follows objects 180 degrees
o Locates sound by turning head and looking in the same direction
o Squeals, coos, babbles, and chuckles
o “Talks” when spoken to
o Recognizes faces, voices, and objects
o Smiles when he/she sees familiar people, and engages in play with them
o Shows awareness to strange situations
* The Fourth Month:
o Drooling begins
o Good head control
o Sits with support
o Bears some weight on legs when held upright
o Raises head and chest off surface to a 90 degree angle
o Rolls from back to side
o Explores and plays with hands
o Tries to reach for objects but overshoots
o Grasps objects with both hands
o Eye-hand coordination begins
o Makes consonant sounds
o Laughs
o Enjoys being rocked, bounced or swung
* The Fifth Month:
o Signs of teething begin
o Holds head up when sitting
o Rolls from stomach to back
o When lying on back puts feet to mouth
o Voluntarily grasps and holds objects
o Plays with toes
o Takes objects directly to mouth
o Watches objects that are dropped
o Says “ah-goo” or similar vowel-consonant combinations
o Smiles at mirror image
o Gets upset if you take a toy away
o Can tell family and strangers apart
o Begins to discover parts of his/her body
* The Sixth Month:
o Chewing and biting occur
o When on stomach can lift chest and part of stomach off the surface bearing weight on hands
o Lifts head when pulled to a sitting position
o Rolls from back to stomach
o Bears majority of weight when being held in a standing position
o Grasps and controls small objects
o Holds bottle
o Grabs feet and pulls to mouth
o Adjusts body to see an object
o Turns head from side to side and then looks up or down
o Prefers more complex visual stimuli
o Says one syllable sounds like “ma”, “mu”, “da”, and “di”
o Recognizes parents
* The Seventh Month:
o Sits without support, may lean forward on both hands
o Bears full weight on feet
o Bounces when held in standing position
o Bears weight on one hand when lying on stomach
o Transfers objects from one hand to another
o Bangs objects on surfaces
o Able to fixate on small objects
o Responds to name
o Awareness of depth and space begin
o Has taste preferences
o “Talks” when others are talking
* The Eight Month:
o Sits well without support
o Bears weight on legs and may stand holding on to furniture
o Adjusts posture to reach an object
o Picks up objects using index, fourth, and fifth finger against thumb
o Able to release objects
o Pulls string to obtain object
o Reaches for toys that are out of reach
o Listens selectively to familiar words
o Begins combining syllables like “mama” and “dada” but does not attach a meaning
o Understands the word no (but does not always obey it!)
o Dislikes diaper change and being dressed
* The Ninth Month:
o Begins crawling
o Pulls up to standing position from sitting
o Sits for a prolonged time (10minutes)
o May develop a preference for use of one hand
o Uses thumb and index finger to pick up objects
o Responds to simple verbal commands
o Comprehends “no no”
o Increased interest in pleasing parents
o Puts arms in front of face to avoid having it washed
* The Tenth Month:
o Goes from stomach to sitting position
o Sits by falling down
o Recovers balance easily while sitting
o Lifts one foot to take a step while standing
o Comprehends “bye-bye”
o Says “dada” or “mama” with meaning
o Says one other word beside “mama” and “dada” (hi, bye, no, go)
o Waves bye
o Object permanence begins to develop
o Repeats actions that attract attention
o Plays interactive games such a “pat-a-cake”
o Enjoys being read to and follows pictures in books
* The Eleventh Month:
o Walks holding on to furniture or other objects
o Places one object after another into a container
o Reaches back to pick up an object when sitting
o Explores objects more thoroughly
o Able to manipulate objects out of tight fitting spaces
o Rolls a ball when asked
o Becomes excited when a task is mastered
o Acts frustrated when restricted
o Shakes head for “no”
* The Twelfth Month:
o Walks with one hand held
o May stand alone and attempt first steps alone
o Sits down from standing position without help
o Attempts to build two block tower but may fail
o Turns pages in a book
o Follows rapidly moving objects
o Says three or more words other than “mama” or “dada”
o Comprehends the meaning of several words
o Repeats the same words over & over again
o Imitates sounds, such as the sounds dogs and cats make
o Recognizes objects by name
o Understands simple verbal commands
o Shows affection
o Shows independence in familiar surrounding
o Clings to parents in strange situation
o Searches for object where it was last seen
